Back on Track

I think I mentioned before- but while I was home I really didn’t think much about eating healthy. Ok, I guess saying that isn’t exactly true. I did think about it, and there were often times that I even acted on it, but there were also times that I did not. Since the numbers on the scales didn’t change in those two months- I’d say that its obvious I maintained, but probably because I was doing more physical activity than I had been before I left.

Now that I’m home- I’m eating more balanced meals and skipping the processed stuff and even though I’m extremely jet lagged, I am feeling better. I haven’t started exercising a lot yet- but that day is coming as soon as the jet lag is gone and I actually can spend more than two hours without wanting to sleep.

Things are getting better with the jet lag- so I know I’m on the right track to getting through it.

I’m making small changes now before I start exercising, so that once I do begin again- it won’t be some huge shock to my system that I’m trying to do too much at once. I know better than that. Baby steps-

I did get some VERY cool running shoes and even though I’ve used them to walk, I can’t wait to start using them regularly- I think it will encourage me to walk and / or run more knowing that when I wear them that it’s connected to my iPhone and tracking my progress.

I do have a blog for this journey- that I’ll begin writing in regularly once I fully get into the swing of things. You’ll be welcome to follow me there and join in the journey if you like-

More on that in days to come.

Time..

Since I know that my body really needs it and because I know I should be and really feel better when I do- I’ve been eating a lot better the last couple of days (since I got sick). I know there is probably some relation to the fact that my eating has been less than healthy (to say the least) and the fact that I keep getting sick, so I’m trying to turn that around.

I’ve also really been reading a lot about different health problems related to the ‘junk’ we (myself included) put in our bodies and I really know that it’s not the way I want to live my life. It doesn’t mean that I’ll never eat something rich and calorie laden again because I’d be lying to you and to myself to say that- but I think it’s time I start actually ‘thinking’ about my food again instead of being so unconscious in all that’s around me.

I ask myself time and time again- why we do this to ourselves.

Goodbye Chocolate Cake

This morning I said goodbye to the chocolate cake that I’ve been eating every chance I get since Saturday. My friend Natalie makes these fabulous cakes and she brought a huge triple chocolate creation to the gathering this past Saturday. There was some left over, and I’ve been eating it- and eating it- and yes- eating it.

Last night- I vowed that it would be my last piece and in spite of the serious urge to cut myself another piece, I haven’t. If I don’t watch it, I’m going to need to ask the question- is hoodia effective and try to find out because my clothes are going to start getting tighter. It’s time to get back on track again before I start packing on the pounds.

Goodbye Chocolate Cake- I’m going to miss you.

Tis The Season for Giving

Christmas has always been my favorite holiday. When I was younger- I am sure I loved it because of the gift receiving aspects, but now as I’ve gotten older, I’ve found that I receive much more joy from giving than I do from receiving. Don’t get me wrong- I love gifts; after all, who doesn’t, but it’s nothing like surprising people randomly and adding a smile to their face.

Today while running around, I stopped in at our local Krispy Kreme shop and picked up some gift certificates good for a dozen original glazed doughnuts. If you buy them- the price is close to $8.00 per dozen, but if you buy the gift certificates they end up costing about 2.75 each dozen. It was a pretty big chunk of change that I had to pay to get them, but I wanted to be able to give them to family and friends- plus pass them out to random strangers. Tis the season- and hopefully it will brighten someones day.

I challenge you to do the same- in any way you can.

Good Eats

Up until now, this has been a vacation of indulgence when it comes to eating. I did pretty well up until the cruise, but the dessert choices were amazing. There wasn’t just ‘one’ great dessert, but many. Of course, I had to try them all. haha The last day of the cruise they had a chocolate extravaganza during lunch and I REALLY indulged then.

Even though we’ve been home a few days- I’ve still found myself on the indulgence side and know that if I am ever going to shed any pounds while I’m here- I’d better start making healthier choices. I stocked up on fresh fruits and veggies today and plan to start doing my best- including adding more exercise to the mix.

I have a 5k to do on December 31st and I’d better start training if I’m planning to make it.

G-U-M-B-O

Mom is making gumbo today and I can’t wait. In fact – she’s making two pots of gumbo- seafood and chicken. Marcel is not a fan of seafood (other than fish), so the shrimp and crabs will be for us and the chicken for him. I was trying to remember the last time I had gumbo and I think it was probably 4 years ago. I don’t remember eating any last time I was home, and I never make it myself. I am so ready. I plan to make some potato salad to go along with it, and all I can say is YUM! To make things extra sweet- my brother and nephew will be here to eat with us. I heart family time!

Fun with Friends

I messaged Samantha this morning to see if they made it back from their trip to the mountains for Thanksgiving. They had. I sent her a message asking if I could come over tomorrow night since I woudn’t get to see her before Desere arrived otherwise. She said I was welcome to come over but asked if I’d rather go out and get sushi tomorrow night. Since I have been craving Chef Scotts- my respose was a big YES, YES, YES!

I told her that I’d be skipping lunch tomorrow, but that was before my friend Debbie messaged me and asked if I wanted to go to a great restaurant in Ocean Springs that serves great hummus. I can’t wait to spend some time with her, so obviously, I said YES!

Looks like it will be breakfast I’m skipping tomorrow and if I don’t watch it I’ll be asking what are the best diet pills because I’m hoping to ‘lose’ weight this trip and not gain. I’m sure I can swing it though. Now that I’m feeling much better, I can get back to exercising.

Coconut Man

This afternoon we had some friends over for fun and games. When it got dark and too cold to stay outside, we decided to come in and goof off. The guys were watching football and the ladies and some of the kids were sitting at the table. Mom drew a smiley face on a coconut that I have and we added a styrofoam hat along with a grapefruit body- Before you knew it- we had a coconut grapefruit snowman. Yes- the things we do to entertain.

Trying Almond Milk

Several months ago a friend of mine told me that she’d been drinking almond milk instead of regular milk. Until that point, I’d never heard of it, but I love almonds and thought if I ran across it I’d give it a try.

I actually forgot about it until two days ago when I was walking through Wal-Mart and saw the familiar Blue Diamond symbol in the milk section. Tucked away between the dairy and soy milk was vanilla almond milk. It was a little on the pricy side, but I really wanted to try it, so I grabbed the half gallon container and put it in my shopping cart.

I’m one of those people that when I buy something new, I want to taste it at the first possible chance, so as soon as all the groceries were in the house, I opened it and poured myself a small amount in the glass. For some reason I expected it to be sweet- maybe it was the vanilla part that threw me off, but it wasn’t. I actually really enjoyed it and have been adding it to my steel-cut oats in the mornings. It has great health benefits and is much lower in calories than most milk- at 40 calories per cup, I could get used to this.

Rolling Calorie Explosion

This morning I finished packing my carry on and I have to say that if you could see the inside that most people would probably gasp. It’s filled with specialty chocolates and cookies- all things that everyone back home love about the area in which we live. Mom said that we’d need to know what is three best diet pill on the market if we ate all the goodies in that carry on, and she’s right. It’s literally a rolling carry on of about 30,000 calories, which is about 8 1/2 pounds. It’s a good thing it’s not all going to one person.
