Competition of the Worst Kind

Filed under: Food for Thought,Health/ Fitness — gardener @ 2:58 am

I was reading an article about healthy lifestyles and something in the article triggered a thought about how we tend to compare ourselves to others and measure our own success (or failures) on how others who are on the same journey are doing. For some people, this can be a form of motivation, but for others it can be a source of frustration and end up becoming more of a negative than a positive.

A lesson that I’ve recently learned is that just because someone else may be on the same journey to better health and to shed the pounds that I am, doesn’t mean that they will have the same results that I do. Every human body is different, and I’ve honestly had to learn to let go of that competitiveness that ends up creating negative thoughts within my mind.

It’s obvious that I’m not going to lose weight as fast as someone who is younger than me. It’s also obvious that I’m not going to lose weight as fast as someone who has had surgery to help them do so. I also am not looking for the quick fix and I have needed to remind myself of that a gazillion times. Our ‘diet’ and ‘instant gratification’ mentalities has us thinking that we need everything- yesterday and we don’t have the patience to wait to get that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

I’m an emotional eater. More often than not, I keep it at bay- but sometimes I don’t. I’ve learned to stop beating myself up about it, and feeding myself the negativity, and instead try to ask myself what’s really going on and get to the root of the issue. We are our own worst enemies and I know in my case, once I break this cycle of feeding myself negativity (we all do it and are far too hard on ourselves) then I know something BIG is going to happen. I’m getting close, but I’m not there quite yet.

In the meantime- the only competition that I have, is that with myself- We are all in this journey together- not in a race to see who can cross the finish line first.

Because I promised- Mmm Mmm Good

I mentioned in a previous entry that I’d bought some shredded carrots earlier in the week with the idea that I’d make some carrot cake muffins. Of course, that was before we knew we were going away for the weekend and I’ve been more than a little busy today. I had grand ideas of creating my own recipe, but since I really didn’t have time for that, I actually adapted a recipe that I found, and they turned out great.

Below is the finished product, and once I have a little more time, I’ll share the recipe on SimplyWizardress.

The recipe made 12, but as you can see one is missing. I had to sample the finished product, and I’m impressed. This recipe is a definate keeper.

As If I Didn’t Have Enough to Do

As if I didn’t have enough to do to get ready for our trip away, I’d forgotten that a few days ago I bought some shredded carrots in hopes of making a carrot muffin recipe. The idea was to create my own recipe, but now that I’m running a little short of time, I’ve decided to modify someone elses recipe. The recipe actually sounds devine with grated carrots, apple and coconut, but I’m going to cut the oil and add apple sauce, plus use olive oil as opposed to corn oil. I’m also going to use whole wheat flour as opposed to white. I’ll keep y’all posted on how they turn out, but I thought they’d be great to take with us this weekend. If they don’t look too scary- I’ll add a picture, and even share the recipe in another post.

The “Skinny” on Eating Out Without Derailing Your Efforts

In my journey to a healthier lifestyle and to shed myself of the pounds, one of the things that I have found to be the most challenging is eating out. When I am at home and whipping up something in the kitchen, I know what I’m cooking, exactly what ingredients are going into what I eat, and it’s easy to formulate the calorie content. Going out for dinner and reading a menu can be like trying to find your way through the jungle. The good thing is, most restaurants now offer an online menu with nutritional information, so if you plan ahead, you can decide what you want before you get there, and not be faced with any distractions. If that isn’t the case, there are actually words that should send up red flags when you are ordering and wanting to make healthy choices, becasue more often than not, these words mean unhealthy choices.

Since SparkPeople shared those words with me today, I thought it would be great to spread the wealth and share them with you.

Watch out for these Words when Reading the Menu:

  • Breaded
  • Fried-Deep Fried
  • Creamed- Creamy
  • Béarnaise or hollandaise
  • White sauce
  • Crispy
  • Cheesy
  • Buttery
  • Loaded
  • Bottomless
  • “Bet you can’t finish it.”
  • Au gratin
  • Country Style
  • Volcano

As you can see there is quite a list, but luckily there is also a list of healthy words to watch for that generally indicates that the item is a healthier option.   Those words are:

Healthier Words to Watch for:

  • Steamed
  • Reduced
  • Baked
  • Marinated
  • Seasoned
  • Fat-Free
  • Whole Wheat
  • Multi-grain
  • Vegetarian
  • Light
  • High Fiber
  • Fresh
  • Red Sauce
  • Vinaigrette

With a little plannning you can stay on track with healthy eating even when you eat out.   It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t deprive yourself and never have a treat, but it means that eating out doesn’t have to derail your efforts.  Also, don’t hesitate to ask for substitutions.  Some restaurants may charge a small fee, but I don’t mind paying extra for a baked potato instead of having french fries.   The calories and fat start adding up when you make little changes.

Tiptoeing….

It’s no secret that tulips are one of my favorite flowers, and earlier this week when I had a chance to literally go tiptoeing through the tulips, I grabbed my camera and off I went.

I actually thought they would be past their peak, but surprisingly there were some colors that were just starting to bloom.  As you can see, it’s a sea of color and I walked along the field passing each color and taking a moment to pause and take in the beauty that each color had to offer.

The smell was almost intoxicating, and once I walked through all the colors, I decided rather than walking back that jogging may be more fun, plus get the heart pumping a little harder than usual.

I’m sure Marcel and his mom wondered what I was running from.  Maybe they even thought that one of the tulip farmers was hot on my tail, but nothing could have been further from the truth.   I simply wanted to run alongside the beautiful colors and make my way back to them.    Once I made it back, I asked Marcel to take a few pictures of me lying in the tulips.  Even though he gave me an odd look when I asked, he obliged me, and my favorite is now my Facebook profile photo.

This is one of many ‘little’ things that bring joy to my life.   I think it’s important to tap into those things that bring us joy and spend time with them.

What brings you joy?

Having a Pup means More Walking

My favorite little canine is snoozing at the moment and as much as I hate to wake him up and take him out to walk in what appears to be rain, it looks like I’m going to have to. I’m expecting Desere any minute now, and I know if I don’t take him now- I’ll have to take him the moment she arrives.

One of the great things about having a dog is that it’s great in making sure that you get the exercise you need. I was telling someone the other day who was talking about weight loss, that with a dog in the house, you don’t need things like phentermine, because as much as we walk, the weight has been melting away.

In fact, yesterday I tried on a pair of pants that had been a little snug, and they were loose. I was definitely doing a happy dance to that one.

There is Help

It seems like everywhere you look these days there is someone struggling with addiction. Addiction problems, be it drug or alcohol seem to be growing at rampant rates. When a person decides that they’d like to get treatment for their addiciton, they don’t always have the time to go through lengthy detox programs, which is why rapid detox is a solution that works well for many. The program allows an 8 hour detox which is the eqivalent to going through an 8 day program, and offers hope to those who are ready to make a change in their life and get the addiction under control. Help is available.

I Thought I Saw

Filed under: Health/ Fitness,Life,Life's Little Hiccups,Shop til ya Drop — gardener @ 11:32 am

A few days ago I was looking in the mirror and I thought I saw a wrinkle! Yes, yes, I know how terribly vain of me not to want wrinkles, but I figure at the young age of 42, I really shouldn’t be getting them, especially since I don’t spend much time out in the sunshine and I lead a pretty healthy lifestyle.

Upon closer inspection I guess you could say it was more of a forehead wrinkle that we all get, but I still couldn’t help thinking about wrinkle cream reviews and wondering if there are any out there that would be beneficial, provided I should need them in the near future. Mom is 20 years older than I without a wrinkle in sight, so I’m hoping that I’ll take after her and not need them for a long time to come. I’d like to be prepared though, just in case.

On Women, Food and God (the Book)

It is no secret that I’ve been on a journey to a better, healthier lifestyle for the past year and a half, and the result of that journey so far has resulted in a weight loss of around 100 pounds. I still have a little way to go, but I can’t tell you how many people ask what ‘diet’ I’m on. I’m not-

I ordered the book On Women, Food and God after I read an excerpt on the Oprah website and I knew this was something I had to read for myself. I wasn’t expecting this book to be some magical key to weight loss, but what I was hoping for, was a different perspective to add to what I’ve learned during this process (which I imagine will be a learning experience from now on) and the book did not disappoint.

I haven’t read much lately and I admit to having a pretty huge pile of books in my ‘to read’ pile, but when I had this one in my hands, I wanted to read it immediately and soak up every little morsel of information. I’ll read it again and again, I’m sure.

The gift of the book helped teach me a few things about myself that I hadn’t thought of before, and that alone will help me along on this journey. I’m grateful I invested in myself buy purchasing the book. It was well worth the 25.00 price tag.

Desere and Olive Sized Stones

Marcel and I are headed back to the hospital to see Desere for what I hope will be the last time at the hospital. She had her surgery today and is doing well. When they removed her gall bladder they also found 6 olive size stones. Can you imagine? That’s huge, and I can’t even begin to fathom the pain she’s been in. Oddly, hearing that they were the size of olives suddenly made me look at olives in a different light. They don’t seem so appealing, at least not at the moment.

So much going on here- and I have a lot to talk about, but that will come. Right now, time to get to the hospital.
