Money Train

Yesterday, Marcel decided to take the evening off work so we could take an impromptu trip to the city via the train.   Generally- when traveling to the city we always take the train because we don’t have to worry about finding a parking space, plus we don’t have to pay the outrageous parking garage prices that the city charges.     I love it, because it means no traffic, no wasting gas (and you know what the gas prices are like these days) and it’s fun!    (You can tell I didn’t grow up in a city or a place where train travel was the norm- because it is an adventure to me as opposed as a mode of transportation.)

I have been trying out new iPhone Photo Apps (as part of my 101 in 1001 day project- and also because it inspires creativity) and I took this one with the Instagram App.   I’ve been using it quite a bit lately and like the black and white results with people- namely Marcel.

Our shopping trip was a success- (meaning we bought what we set out to get- a pair of shoes that were on sale, for Marcel).   We even saved more moolah than the original sale price with a few promotions the store had going on- which ultimately paid for our train tickets.

I did find a Burberry bag that I was practically drooling over, and probably would have been tempted to buy- but after all- I do want a new couch this year, and a few other things so I refrained-  for now.     Looks like maybe I should start working a little more so I can indulge in this little lavish gift for myself.   Patience is a virtue-  or so they say.

Make Like Forrest and RUN!

I bought these shoes a while back because I thought it would be good while trying to train for a 5K to actually have ‘running shoes’ as opposed to Crocs to run in.   I know- it sounds crazy (and probably looked even crazier), but those Crocs made some pretty good running shoes.

I will admit that I bought these because the stripe was red (one of my favorite colors), and then I bought the “Project RED- Nike shoestrings” simply because they matched so well.    I also found out that these shoes would support the Nike + iPod (iPhone) platform, so I bought the sensor and I was ready.

Yesterday I put my ‘shoes’ on and I walked to Desere’s-  9 minutes for just under 3/4 of a mile.   I wasn’t running- but walking and based on the fact that I was out of breath, I obviously need to put those shoes on more often.

I did a little running yesterday afternoon with JJ  in hopes that he’d get a shed a little excess energy- and I felt great.

I think I need to make like Forrest Gump and start -running more often.  Who wants to join me?   Now that the daylight hours are longer- it makes it so easy to walk in the evenings after dinner.

Middle of Nowhere

Filed under: Techy — gardener @ 10:30 am

When I was home for the holidays, I noticed that I had little to no cell reception at mom and diddy’s home. They do live in what could be considered the ‘middle of nowhere’ and even they have hit and miss reception with their provider in the ‘boonies’. If we want to get them at home- we always have to call the house. I’m wondering if cell signal boosters would actually help their signal while at home? It would give them the opportunity to have their phones with them while working in the yard without actually having to miss important calls. It’s definitely worth doing the research, especially if it will make mom and diddy more accessable when they are out in the ‘back 40’.

Outlawed

My brother and I were talking the other night and he told me that he’d stopped buying Girl Scout cookies. This little tidbit of information came after I told him that I’d bought my first five boxes in probably 15 years. He said that he knew better, since you can’t eat ‘just one’, so he stopped buying them all together.

I figured since it had been so long that it wouldn’t be a big deal for me. That was my frist mistake. In two days we’ve eaten two boxes in this household. I gave one box away, so that leaves two boxes. I’d love to be able to say that Marcel has been the one eating most of them, but I’d be lying- It’s me.

I have to agree that those Girl Scouts put something in those cookies to make us want more- more- more. As delicious as they are- I don’t think I’ll be buying any more.

Grazing

After the Chinese food, Girl Scout cookie dinner that I just had- it won’t surprise me one bit if I end up with blackheads on nose as a part of the punishment of my choices. I know- it sounds a little over the top, or maybe even silly, but the truth of the matter is- I’ve had one of those days that I want to eat everything but the kitchen sink.

Thankfully- I can now say the kitchen is CLOSED, so I will keep out and hopefully not consume another calorie between now and tomorrow. I almost liked having vertigo better- At least then I didn’t want to eat.

Surprise Phone Calls

Last night the phone rang and Marcel answered it. He brought it to me and when I asked who it was, he said he didn’t know. As soon as I said Hello and heard the other person speak, I knew it was my friend M. from Australia. We’ve talked several times in the past on the telephone and even though it has been quite some time- that’s one voice I won’t soon forget.

It was SO wonderful to catch up with her, share a few ideas and thoughts with each other and a little laughter. We both agreed that it had been far too long and we need to do it more often. Thank you again, M. for the wonderful surprise. It was definitely the highlight of my day.

Lasting Impressions

I have Dr. Phil set on the DVR to record every afternoon, five days a week. I rarely have the television on during the day- even if I’m home, but I’ll go back and watch them from time to time when I have spare time on my hands. I notice that there seem to be a lot of people there needing help with drugs or other addiction issues and I’m happy that he can direct them to some of the best rehab treatment centers in the area, but I often wonder what happens to these guests after the fact. I know that sometimes they do update shows, but other times they don’t.

I remember way back in the day- before the Jerry Springer show included flying chairs- he did a lot with the homeless. I remember a homeless kid called Tweaky Dave and I often wonder what happened to him. It’s weird how some things or people leave a lasting impression- often without even realizing.

Time to Update-

Filed under: Techy — gardener @ 1:22 pm

I have been receiving messages here and there that most of my technology needs ‘updating’.   My blogging software needs updating- several apps on my iPhone need updating- including the Operating system, so it looks like I’m going to spend a little time tomorrow in front of the desktop updating my iTunes and then updating my phone.

I am the world’s worst about putting these sort of things off. I’m on top of so much and don’t let things get past me- but updates seem to be at the bottom of my priority list.   Maybe I should mix things up and start at the bottom of my ‘to do’ list and work upward.

What’s Good For One..

While I’m catching up on my blogging- I’m watching a weight loss show that I recorded at another time and the weight loss in the past few weeks are amazing.  Of course- there are some that are less amazing results, but I find these type of shows motivating.  I enjoy hearing how they do things- and one of the women in the interviews commented that she’d done a lot of research online, including reading hydroxycut reviews and a few others. She said she was tired of taking the easy way out and was ready to confront the emotional eating- and the results have proved that.

I know that everyone is different and their bodies are different, so I’m always happy to see what works for one, while it doesn’t work for another- the bottom line- healthy eating is the best for everyone- regardless of how that’s done.

Negativity

Filed under: Food for Thought,Inspiration,Life's Little Hiccups — gardener @ 6:27 am

Several days ago I was talking to someone about negativity and how it tends to manifest within us if we aren’t careful.   I try to be a positive and happy person (most of the time) and see the best in every situation.   It isn’t always easy, but it’s something that I try to do, even though not always successful.

What I have noticed (or noticed over the last year) that when we surround ourselves with people who always see things in the negative or as a negative, that it’s quite simple to pick up that behavior.   It’s toxic and sometimes even without realizing it we can become negative.

Interstingly enough- last night I was watching TV and during a show someone mentioned a quote (I can’t remember by whom) that said,  “There aren’t negative happenings in life, but simply negative reactions.”

I’m a firm believer that perpective is everything, and if you expect negative- you will definitely get it.   On the flip side of that coin:  it doesn’t mean that you will never be given obstacles (that’s unrealistic and a completely different topic) but it’s what you do with those obstacles that count.     You can let them be a brick wall- stopping you in your tracks, or you can use them to learn from- to add to your life experiences that leaves you richer and knowing that the biggest thing stopping us at times isn’t what happens to us- but how we choose to react to it.
